Are There Prophecies Jesus Didn’t Fulfill?

This is often the question that many people believe Christians (believers in Jesus) will get stumped on. And honestly, this is the question that many Christians do get stumped on? So … will Explore Messiah? Can we answer this question or not?

Let us answer honestly you that there are several types of prophecy from the perspective of Explore Messiah:

  • There is the type of prophecy that has only ONE meaning. It can only mean one thing and one thing only. ONE example of this type of prophecy is the prophecy that relates to the birthplace of the Messiah – Micah 5:1 (2).
  • There is the type of prophecy that potentially has an immediate meaning at the time it was given and then a second or ULTIMATE meaning later. ONE example of this type of prophecy is the prophecy of the virgin which shall conceive and given birth to a son in Isaiah 7:14.
  • There is the final type of prophecy that has a final culmination meaning at the end of history/time. ONE example of this type of prophecy in the Hebrew Scriptures is the prophecy in which the wolf and lamb and shall feed together in Isaiah 65:25 or Adonai/LORD shall be King over all the earth in Zechariah 14:9.

These are all prophecies that have been or will be fulfilled if we trust in God’s goodness and sovereignty. We believe this to be true.

We believe that not all have been fulfilled as of yet (but only #3). However, we also believe they will be fulfilled in and through Messiah Jesus and have no worries about it either. Our faith is not shaken by saying so.

There was never an expectation, except by Maimonides and Rabbinic/Modern Judaism, that Messiah Jesus had to fulfill ALL of the Messianic prophecies in his first coming. In fact, during the times before Jesus there was an understanding of two Messiahs – Messiah ben Joseph and Messiah ben David who would each come once to fulfill the prophecies of the Hebrew Scriptures.

  • Messiah ben Joseph to fulfill the prophecies related to the sacrificial/suffering prophecies such as Isaiah 53 and Psalm 22
  • Messiah ben David to fulfill the prophecies related to the triumphant prophecies such as Zechariah 14 and Isaiah 65/66

In other words – two Messiahs coming each once instead of one Messiah coming twice. Therefore, we ask only one question after 2,000 years, we have had Jesus already come once and fulfill the first prophecies … why would it not make tremendous sense for him to come back and fulfill the second prophecies instead of keep waiting for Joseph and/or David?

Ultimately, we acknowledge that we are asking you to take this exploration as a matter of faith. Every journey is a matter of faith. We hope we have given you a roadmap that makes sense and is logical. We also hope that you will stop at CAFÉ Kehillah if you need directions or would simply like to ask for more directions. This is a lifelong journey but remember what James 4:14 tells us … life is short and it is only here for a little while and then is gone. Don’t take too long. Explore!
